We’ve had the opportunity to work with so many incredible vendors in the wedding community over the years and we’ve decided to start a new series where we highlight some of our favorite people to work with! We’re starting off strong with my dear friend Candis, the QUEEN of cakes over at Honeybee Cake Co.
I was asked to create a cake for my friend’s daughter’s birthday several years ago. Honestly, it was the ugliest cake I had ever seen, but something sparked inside me that day. I’ve always had an extremely creative mind, but figuring out how to make a career out of it was the challenging part. I decided to go all in and learn everything I could about cake artistry. I worked a full time job, sold cakes, and went to culinary school for about a year. Looking back on it, I have no idea how I pulled that off, but it was absolutely worth the exhaustion.
I think oftentimes general bakers and cake artists get looped into the same category. While yes, cake artists are bakers, cake artists specialize in the art of cake. We study different edible mediums and design techniques that allow us to create a unique showpiece. We never stop learning. We keep up with the latest cake trends, while perfecting the classic designs. There’s a huge difference in going to a high volume bakery to order a wedding cake, versus ordering through a cake artist. It’s a very personalized experience working with me. Each and every detail of your wedding is taken into account before creating an original design.
Wedding cake first looks. Oftentimes, the bride will come out to view the wedding cake before the ceremony. This moment is so special to me and is typically filled with tears and big hugs. That feeling and seeing the happiness is why I do what I do.
Do whatever you want to do. There’s no rules for your day. Don’t feel like you need to wait until the end of the reception to cut your cake. If you want to slice your cake right as you walk into the reception, do it! If you want to slice it with a samurai sword, go for it!
The only rule: Listen to your cake artist about when the best time is to deliver your cake. There’s no need for a cake to sit out for hours before the reception. It will melt. You will be sad.
